Sundowning is a burst of energy often experienced by a person with Alzheimer's in the late afternoon and evening. Licensed Master Social Worker Cheryl Blanchard lists some triggers that may cause sundowning and tips for managing it.

Tips for managing sundowning:

  • Limit daytime napping
  • Keep house bright and active during the day and decrease light and activity as day goes on
  • Plan activities earlier in the day
  • See if your loved one is in pain, needs a restroom or is hungry
  • Eliminate caffeine and evaluate recent medication changes
  • Use night lights
  • Reassure and guide your loved one back to their room
  • Establish bedtime routines
  • Make the home safe
